Late Classical Era and Early Western Civilization. Our class begins with the later period of the Roman Empire, leading to its decline and fall and the rise of Byzantium. We cover the history of the Byzantine Empire and the spread of Islam, the great Islamic conquests, the development of the barbarian kingdoms in Europe, the Crusades, the Hundred Years War and the rise of Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire.
